RFID Journal grows Extremely Fast with Help from EZ Publishing
In less than three years, The RFID Journal Web site has grown from 5,000 page views per month to 1,500,000 page views per month. This rapid growth was made possible by a close collaboration between the RFID Journal and EZ Publishing.
RFID Journal was launched as a Web site devoted to the emerging technology of Radio Frequency Indentification and its many business applications in March 2002. Founder Mark Roberti, a journalist with 20 year's experience, felt RFID an important technology, and companies needed information about it. So he learned HTML, designed and built a simple Web site and started posting news.
Traffic increased very quickly and it became clear that the Web site could be a viable subscription business and that the current site could not scale to support the business. In the fall of 2002, Roberti was introduced to EZ Publishing, a company with a content management system that could greatly reduce the administrative workload of maintaining a dynamic news site. Roberti decided that the content management system was just the thing to take RFID Journal to the next level.
"The EZ Publishing content management system was just what RFID Journal needed," says founder Mark Roberti. "I was traveling and writing articles on the road. I could upload stories from anywhere, as long as I had Internet access."
RFID Journal’s Web traffic continued to increase quickly, and it was clear the company needed a more powerful hosting solution. The startup soon upgraded to a managed dedicated server with EZ Publishing, which provided the performance and reliability that the RFID Journal needed to continue to grow.
"We had problems with our first hosting company with the Web site going down," says Roberti. "The worst thing for a growing business is not being able to provide reliable service. The upgrade enabled us to ensure that people logging onto the site would be able to get on when they wanted to and read the stories they wanted to read."
As RFID Journal grew, its needs became more complex. The Web site evolved from a straight news site to a knowledge portal for the RFID industry, with a library of white papers users could download, a vendor directory, a Request for Quote system, and other cutting-edge features, all developed by the EZ Publishing team.
"We've introduced a print magazine and executive conferences but our Web site remains the center of our business," says Roberti. "As such, we want to continually provide new features and tools for our readers. EZ Publishing has not only been able to work with us to create these based on our initial ideas, but has done so in a timely and cost-effective way."
EZ Publishing also worked with RFID Journal to create new Web sites for its executive conferences. These sites are custom built based on designs provided by RFID Journal. EZ Publishing did the coding for RFID Journal LIVE! sites, faithfully rendering the site to look exactly like the graphics files provided by RFID Journal.
RFID Journal had been using an e-mail service to send out its weekly newsletter to subscribers. In 2004, the company decided to switch to StreamSend, EZ Publishing's email marketing service. The main benefit of switching is that EZ Publishing could host all of RFID Journal's customer databases.
In addition, RFID found StreamSend’s Application Programming Internface (API) that made it easy for EZ Publishing to integrate the StreamSend signup interface into RFID Journal’s Website, to make it very easy for subscribers to subscribe. In addition, Roberti likes StreamSend’s capability to do reporting on demographic data and reporting.
EZ Publishing is now undertaking a major development effort to link these databases and create a powerful marketing and fulfillment system for RFID Journal. As RFID Journal continues to grow rapidly, EZ Publishing continues to meet their needs.
